The Read, Write, Rock project is an effort to build new tools that will accelerate middle school literacy. The core project will utilize iPads and a suite of web tools to build a classroom built on bytes, not paper.
The iPads will provide access to burgeoning collections of eBooks, allowing students to quickly access high-interest texts on their precise reading level. Second, iPads will allow students to practice their reading skills on more than just books, giving them access to everything from news on current events to the wealth of high-quality graphic novels aimed squarely at their demographic. Third, the iPads allow for an entirely new classroom workflow, breaking free from the confines of composition books, broken pencils, and reams of worksheets. Using free web tools, students will interact with digital lesson content, work with differentiated texts, capture their thinking in a secure digital format, and collaborate with other students to share their ideas in real-time. Moreover, preserving student work in a digital format will allow faster teacher feedback, better analysis and tracking of skill mastery, and sharing with other teachers, administrators, and parents.
